This WoW guide (up-to-date for patch 3.3) will cover training your Engineering levels from 1 to 450 and what to make while leveling Engineering in World of Warcraft. Engineering is a primary profession (of which you can only choose two at any point in the game) and allows your character to create a variety of items such as guns, bullets, arrows, scopes and more. Engineering complements the Mining profession very well, as Mining can provide many of the raw materials required for Engineering. This guide focuses on making the training path easier by using plans that can be learned from Engineering trainers and plans with the most easily obtained materials. It also looks to make the items that will prove most cost effective at each stage. Unless stated otherwise, all the plans/schematics used in this guide can be purchased from an Engineering Trainer of appropriate level.
The plans for items to craft with Engineering have a color coded property when you view them.
Red – Engineering level not yet high enough to craft this item
Orange - High chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Yellow - Moderate chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Green – Low chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Gray – No chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Engineering is a particularly expensive profession as a large number of items go from red to yellow as soon as they become available, that is, there is only a moderate chance of increasing your Engineering level even when crafting an item when it first becomes available. As a result, the number of items you will need to craft to get Engineering levels will be pretty random – Good Luck!
Finally, the majority of items you create with Engineering will require your character to be in possession of a Blacksmith Hammer and in proximity to an anvil.

thanks!
This is really helpful, thanks a lot
the only problem i had with this was no list of overal mats needed, and certain things i needed to have to make sumthing i didnt have enough of. example ….
151-158 Bronze Framework made me 9 and i made another one for a skill up to 159 that gave me 10 so how am i supposed to do
159-175 Explosive Sheep when the sheep takes 1 framework to make 1 even with the 10 i have it will only take me to 170 and thats if i skill on every one.
i thought the point of a guide was so you knew what to make and howmuch stuff you need to make, this is a VERY general guide of what to make and is like a list of things u can make with engy lvls next to it, imma try to find a better one.
I’m sorry you feel the guide is too general for you – I did state at the beginning of this guide that because many engineering plans are immediately yellow, the numbers of items required to craft can be random and for that reason I’d be loathe to state an upfront list of materials.
It does seem that i have messed the level suggestions when I recently updated the guide – that’s been sorted now thanks to your feedback.
Dude Spiph thanks a TON for the great guide!!! Helped me a TON!
Should add White Smoke Flares to the list. Much cheaper than some of that stuff.
Thanks for the tip – I’ve updated the guide to reflect this as an option.
This helped me a lot, along with your mining guide!
This giude is exactly what i did to get my lvl 18 Gnome Rogue to max out his engineering in just two days. But for none twinks wanting to max out there engineering lvl, i would not suggest this guide. You could do the 1-30 with no trouble but, the 31-165 would cost around 125g for cost an the AH. Also the mats on this guide are before the prospecting add from Blizzard old patch. this means all jewcrafters are looking to prospecting, and miners do wat any smart WoW player would do… They stock up. In conclusion all the ore need to produce engineering skill has more than tripled in price since the new patch.
Yes….great guide helped me a lot!!!!
Just talked to a GM today. The membership cards have been removed from the game. No more free receipes.
Do you know where one can change from gobblin specialization to gnomish? With the patch 3.2 it says that engineers can switch. I just haven’t had any luck finding out where to do it.
There is a house just north of Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris where you will find Narain Soothfancy. In the house is the Book “Soothsaying for Dummies”, which will allow you to unlearn one Specialization and learn a new one.
Used it to lvl……worked fine though very expensive…just on question…wth do I have to do to get that last lvl…(449-450)..I made like 22 army knives and nothing though it is still green….am I just losing to the percentile odds?
@Daenner
You’re just being screwed by the RNG.
I highly recommend at engineering level 300 (toon level 60) that you make the flying machine. Loads of fun.
Good guide.
at begining lvls its good to make dynamite it is cheap speads up the learnig proces plus you can use it to pull mobs or sell it with a profit
A great guide. Everyone told me that engineering would be very expensive to level, but thanks to this guide, I was able to get to 447 without spending a penny.
Thnxs bra this guide was very helpful and its just what i needed not to general either
Thanks alot! Really helped me to make plans to get my engineering level higher
I’ve seen gear operated swords and such in the game, are these weapons made through the engineering profession?
no there not i think the one ur talking about is a mace and that is bought with emblems of heroism 40 to be exact and u have to be 80 to get thoose
actually the gear operated sword you are refering to is most likely the tanking sword from h toc… but other than that there is the mace whcih is an heirloom item and it’s modeled after a mace that was in wow pre-bc.
I saw on the WOW website that for a fee you can switch from goblin to Gnomish engineering but who do you have to talk to to switch it?
See comment 13 above, which details the location you need to go to to unlearn a specialization.
What a FANTASTIC resource!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to put it all together for everyone to avail themselves of. You deserve many many cookies!!! LOL I powerleveled to 400 in about 5 hours (course tons of gold later) but couldn’t have done it as easily without the guide!! Thanks again
Excellent Guide many thanks. My army knives stopped giving me points at 448 – easy fix though 2 Wormhole Generator: Northrend (learnt from the trainer in dalaran and it was all good
Hi,
I’ve noticed one thing with all your guides. I think this is wrong:
Orange – High chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Yellow – Moderate chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Green – Low chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Gray – No chance of increasing Engineering level when crafting this item
Orange is guaranteed to level.
Yellow is High chance
Green and Grey are fine.
I would say Yellow is High chance because it levels more than it doesn’t.
Cheers.
Blizzard’s descriptions are available here.
Orange – this is not guaranteed. This is a small chance that crafting an item will not gain you a level. I suspect the success rate is something like 99 out of every 100 attempts, so it is very rare not to gain a level
Yellow – in my experience this will usually give a level in about 7 out of every 10 attempts.
Green – in my experience this will usually give a level in about 3 out of every 10 attempts.
Gray – this will never increase a level.
Dude was an awesome guide no mess no trouble i lvled to 450 in a single day loved it thanx again !!!!
this guide is the best i’ve seen very detailed! great job!
Great guide, thanks!
If you’re interested, I created a spreadsheet based off this guide which lays out the required materials in a grid and displays all the ore required for leveling up engineering. Let me know if you’d like to have it.
my engineering is 465 not 450 but i cant find info on where to get the recipes for the items that jeeves requires
I’m a little confused as to how to go from 285 – 300. To train to master level you need 300. To get 300 you need to make thorium shells which is listed in the master table which aren’t available until 300.
You can train for master level at skill level 275.
