WoW Blacksmithing Guide 1-450

by Spiph

This WoW guide (up-to-date for patch 3.3.3) will cover training your Blacksmithing levels from 1 to 450 and what to make while leveling Blacksmithing in World of Warcraft. Blacksmithing is a primary profession (of which you can only choose two at any point in the game) and allows your character to forge a variety of items such as armor (mail and plate) and melee weapons. Blacksmithing complements the Mining profession very well, as Mining can provide many of the raw materials required for Blacksmithing. This guide focuses on making the training path easier by using plans that can be learned from Blacksmithing trainers and plans with the most easily obtained materials. It also looks to make the items that will prove most cost effective at each stage. Unless stated otherwise, all the plans used in this guide can be purchased from a Blacksmithing trainer of appropriate level.

Apart from stones, in order to create items the character needs to be in possession of a Blacksmith Hammer and in proximity to an anvil.

Level 35 Character required
The artisan and master levels are particularly difficult as the majority of plans at these levels are world drops or are only available through the specialization quests (see the end of this guide for more details on specialization). The route offered here uses the few plans available from Blacksmith trainers or vendors, but if you intend to specialize then completing the related quests would provide additional options for these levels.

Specializations

Level 40 Character required
After reaching level 200 in Blacksmithing it is possible to choose a specialization. The specializations allow you to make powerful armors or weapons, however the majority of these items can only be used by your character or other specialist blacksmiths. Specializing as an Armorsmith will provide exclusive access to powerful armor plans, while specializing as a Weaponsmith will provide exclusive access to powerful melee weapon plans.

Armorsmithing
In order to complete The Art of the Armorsmith quest, a series of other quests need to be completed to get the armor plans required
For Alliance players, complete the quests The Origins of Smithing and In Search of Galvan available from Hank the Hammer in the Dwarven District, Stormwind
For Horde players, complete the quests The Old Ways available from Aturk the Anvil in the Valley of Honor, Orgrimmar. Then complete the quest Booty Bay or Bust! available from Ox in the Valley of Honor, Orgrimmar

I wanted to become a master swordsmith and I had no idea where to go. I was a level 412 blacksmith before I finally heard of your website. Thanks alot for the help. I NEVER would’ve found the trainer in Winterspring if it wasn’t for you.

no blacksmith patterns available at quartermasters in northrend its all leather working or jewelcrafting it would be nice if blizzard would add some since nearly all the plate quest rewards are meant for palladin.

Thank you for putting this up, it is really helpful! The one thing I would maybe add is thorium boots to the end of the artisan section. Fewer reagents.

At end game, blacksmiths can make gem sockets for some of his items; however, do they stack with the enchanting chants on the same items that are blacksmith socked?

Great guide! Needed to know where to go for weapon specialization!

The sockets count as permanent enchantments, as does the fur linings for bracers from leatherworking. So, no they do not stack.
